After Europeans arrived in Harris County during the early 19th century, Cypress was founded along Cedar Elm Creek near Hall’s Bridge on what was previously part of William Scott’s league. By 1837 David W. King occupied a log cabin on this creek. A small general store was established at Hall’s Crossing in 1841 (where Cypress-Fairbanks Road currently crosses Cedar Elm Creek) and William McFarland operated a post office from his home. In 1845 King established a new community on the banks of Brays Bayou at Hall’s Bluff, about two miles inland from Halls Crossing. This town was named “Cypress Branch” in homage to the abundance of Cypress trees growing along Brays Bayou. The settlement later shortened its name to “Cypress”. By the early 1850s many German immigrants, including Gus Bayer and Carl Wunsche, moved to Cypress. A few years later, J. C. League acquired large tracts of land southeast of Houston and encouraged fellow farmers from Pennsylvania to homestead here by providing easy credit based on cotton production.

In 1865 the settlement was officially incorporated at Hall’s Bluff and residents suggested naming the town “Lincoln” to recognize the historical significance of the recently ended Civil War. Although most citizens voted for the name change, another faction insisted that the old name be retained; thus, two names appeared on local ballots: “Lincoln” and “Cypress”. The Texas government picked Cypress, so the community became officially known by that name.
In 1871 William Baker moved his family from Pinehurst, Mississippi and became one of Cypress’ earliest pioneers when he established his homestead along Brays Bayou. His land was near where Blalock Road currently intersects the bayou.
