Conroe was first settled in the early 1840s by the Cane family.
Asa Cane came to Texas from Alabama before statehood, and his sons helped settle Conroe. The Canes were among many natives of Alabama who moved to the Piney Woods to escape yellow fever epidemics (Badger, 2003).
Conroe was named for Montgomery County after it split off from Walker County in 1846. A year later, John H. Kampmann chose the settlement as the county seat of said county; Conroe incorporated under that name two years later (City of Conroe Official Website).
The city has seen its ups and downs like other cities around Texas due to events such as the civil war, oil busts, the great depression, and other events. Today the city is thriving with tourism especially to Lake Conroe.

The population of Conroe as of 2020 is projected to be over 101,000 people. Conroe is a very historical place and during the early 20th century it thrived with tourism at Lake Conroe.
